Cold medications pulled out of Market
On October 11, 2007, the trade association that represents the U.S. manufacturers of OTC medications (CHPA) announced a voluntary withdrawal of oral cough and cold medicines that refer to “infants”. The withdrawal does not affect those medications that are labeled for use in children two and older.
As the provider of pediatric content for your web site, Pediatric Web has been following this issue throughout 2007. We have been in consultation with the AAP as well as physicians who have done some of the research on cough medications.
Effective immediately, we have removed all of the “infant-labeled” medications from the table that can be found on your web site. We have also removed dosages for cough and cold medications for children under 2 years of age.
The FDA has called for a joint advisory committee meeting this week. The AAP and manufacturers have submitted recommendations to this committee. It is anticipated that new labeling on OTC cough and cold medications will change the terminology for children under 2 from “Ask a Doctor” to “Do Not Use”.
